June 26 2019 has been set as the first annual World Refrigeration Day.

“The initiative will raise the profile of the important contribution that refrigeration air conditioning and heat pumps make globally across so many aspects of modern life – from medical, to food supply and farming, process engineering to data and IT, refrigeration technologies are essential and yet go widely unrecognised.”

We have medicines that can be mass-produced and shipped and stored with an extremely high degree of confidence in their safety and effectiveness once used.

Computers and servers need to run in a cool environment to keep on functioning; our society depends on computers and the internet at this point. Without the refrigerating capabilities of air conditioners, our modern society’s commerce and communications would come to a screeching halt.

Here in Lethbridge, our summers are hot and our air conditioners are extremely welcome, but in parts of the world, air conditioning is practically necessary for life. Beyond making it bearable to live in your house in a very hot place, air conditioning in hospital settings critical for the well-being of patients.
